Gems of the Past: Karen Adler


Karen J. Adler
received a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences at University of Pittsburgh in 1972.  She worked for Merck, Sharpe & Dohme, West Point, Pennsylvania in pharmaceutical research.  Upon marrying Stevan in 1976, she went to work for Hoffmann La Roche, Nutley, New Jersey in pharmaceutical research.  She retired to raise a family and became involved in volunteer work.   In 1992 she began taking jewelry history courses for the next five summers.  In the fall of 1996, she began the in residence graduate gemology degree program at Gemological Institute of America in New York City.  She commuted daily and graduated in March, 1997.  In 2001 Karen became a Registered Jeweler, American Gem Society (AGS), 2003 she became a Certified Gemologist, AGS, and in 2005 she passed the examination for Certified Gemologist Appraiser

 


Gems of the Past: Stevan Adler


Stevan Adler
received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at Cornell University in 1965.  He then went on to receive a Medical Degree at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, 1969.  Following this he trained for two years in Internal Medicine at St. Louis University Hospital and then did a four year Fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Roswell Park Institute in Buffalo, New York.  A one year Fellowship in Hematology was done at Mercy Catholic Medical Center, Darby Pennsylvania.   In 1976 he married Karen and joined a private medical oncology/hematology practice in Northern New Jersey.   He retired after 28 years of medical practice in 2005.  He began the gemology program with the Gemmological Association of Great Britain and graduated and became a Fellow (FGA) in 2007.  He also completed the Diamonds Graduate Diploma at Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in 2007.  This year he also became a Registered Jeweler, American Gem Society (AGS) and in 2008 he became a Certified Gemologist (AGS).
